Assignment #11- Final Essay Blog

Oppression means a cruel or unjust treatment that it prolonged. Violent resistance means that people want change using harm and threatening death, non-violent resistance means that they protest in a peaceful way. Agency is the ability to choose the outcome of one’s own life. Oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because some people that have used no violence have gotten agency. For example Malala Yousafzai who wants all children to get an education. Students at Fremont High School trying to clean and change their city by taking pictures of things that need to be changed and reporting them, and the people of Chibok that use no violence they use their words and protest to get back the girls that were kidnapped by Boko Haram.

First of all the document that I’m going to use supports my answer to the essay question because the people of Chibok are peacefully protesting without violence. This document is about the event that happened in Chibok, Borno, Nigeria where the terrorist group Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls. Some of the girls kidnapped where forced to carry out suicide bombings. This document is an excerpt from an article on the Washington Post’s website made by Kevin Sieff on April 14, 2016. The information is trustworthy because it is from a reliable website and they got the information from a primary source, like government officials. A quote that supports my evidence is, “ A young woman carrying a baby emerged Wednesday from the Nigerian bush with a story that began over two years ago: She was among the more than 200 schoolgirls abducted… The end of the women’s ordeal was likely to raise hope that others held by Boko Haram could find freedom… Pentagon flies unarmed drones to help track the Boko Haram.” This shows that oppressed people should use nonviolent resistance because if they would have violence Boko Haram would have killed all the girls. So that girl would have never been released and they wouldn’t have gotten closer to finding the girls. Also the unarmed drones also help because if Boko Haram would have felt threatened with armed drones they would also probably kill all the girls. That is why nonviolence helps gain agency.

Second of all the document that I am going to use supports my essay question because the students of Fremont High School want to make change by taking pictures of things that can be fixed around their city and reporting them on SeeClickFix. This document is about how freshman at Fremont High are making change in their environment by using SeeClickFix to try to get things like illegal dumping, graffiti, messed up sidewalks, and potholes. This document is pictures from the students posters of the status of their problems and how many are Open, Acknowledged, or Closed, created my Jason Muniz on April 27, 2018. The information on this document is trustworthy because it is new information and it is from the primary source. A quote from the document that supports my evidence is, “Closed: Graffiti- 1, Sidewalk- 0, Potholes- 2, Trash Dumping- 6.” There is also still 21 acknowledged sidewalk problems. This explains why oppressed people should use nonviolence resistance because instead of using violence to force the city to fix the problems the students would report it and they actually got some things fixed, to gain agency.

Third of all the final document that I’m going to use supports my essay question answer because it shows how Malala Yousafzai uses nonviolence to gain agency. This document is about a speech that Malala Yousafzai gave at the United Nations General Assembly talking about her struggles and what she is peacefully fighting for. This document is an excerpt from the speech given by Malala on July 21, 2013. The information from this document is trustworthy because it is right from the speech that she gave, so it is from a primary source. A quote from this document that supports my claim is, “Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorist group. I am here to speak for the right of education for every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.” This shows that oppressed people should use non violent resistance because she talks about not hating anyone, including the person that shot her in the head, and all she wants is education for every child so they can have agency.

  • What are the different statuses on the posters, and what do each of them mean?  The three statuses are: Acknowledged, Open, and Closed. Acknowledged means that they are working on trying to get it fixed, they are waiting. Open means that the city has seen it and are probably currently fixing it. Closed means that it has been fixed or the city said that there is absolutely nothing that can be done.
  • Describe what you did (or what you were supposed to do) to find out if the issue you submitted to SeeClickFix was fixed.                                                                              Do find out if my issue had been fixed I went on my SeeClickFix account and went to the thing that I submitted and it said the status ion big bright letters.
  • What changes do you notice from the April 13th posters to the April 27th posters? Most of the ones that were on Open have now changed to Acknowledged. And only a handful moved to Closed. Most of the Closed ones are trash dumping and most of the Acknowledged ones are messed up sidewalks.
  • Do you think there are any types of issues SeeClickFix is better at getting fixed than others?  Why do you think that?                                                                                  I feel like trash dumping is being fixed the most out of anything else. I think it’s like that because it is the easiest and fastest to get solved.
  • If an issue someone reported did not get fixed, what is something they might try next?                                                                                                                                            Depends on what it is some people might actually go and try to fix it them self. Or they might get more people to report the same problem. They could also go themselves to city hall and talk to someone that can get it fixed.
  • Do you think people who report issues to SeeClickFix are able to gain agency?  Explain your answer.                                                                                                              I feel like they do because it a pothole that they reported was fixed, they won’t have to worry about getting into a car accident because of that pothole.

  • Describe how the 9th grade students are tracking the progress of the issue we reported using sticky notes and posters.  What do each posters mean?                       SeeClickFix gives us the status of our problem, we then write it down on our sticky note and put it on the poster that matches the status. Open means that they looked at it, Acknowledged means that they know that there is a problem. Closed means that it is fixed or if they are going to do nothing about it.
  • What did you learn about the status of the issue you reported to SeeClickFix? Did it change (If so, how)?  Did your issue’s status stay the same? Explain your answer.                                                                                                                                       The status on my problem was Acknowledged. It has been like that since like the first day that I reported the problem.
  • Describe the response you got about the issue you reported.  What was the message you received? Who sent you that message?                                                       I received a comment from City of Oakland Call Center basically saying that they acknowledged my problem.
  • Did any patterns emerge on the poster about which issues are resolved, and which are not?  Explain your answer.                                                                                 The problems that are most of the time solved are the illegal dumping. Most acknowledged are sidewalk damage. And most open are potholes.
  • Is the SeeClickFix project an example of Violent or Non-Violent resistance to oppression?  Explain your answer.                                                                                       This is an example of non-violent resistance because we’re not out here hurting anybody or destroying things. We’re just on the internet trying to make change.
  • Do you think SeeClickFix can help to solve problems in Oakland?  Explain why or why not.                                                                                                                                      Yes they can help solve problems because they can help us clean up the city and make it a better more prettier place to live, make us a cleaner city.

  • In your own words describe what the company called SEECLICKFIX does for people living in Oakland?  They help the people in Oakland by making the city look better. They help fix things that need to be fixed.
  • Do you think SEECLICKFIX helps people in Oakland to resist oppression?  Explain why, or why not?  I think it does help the people of Oakland resist oppression because the city have treated us bad for years by not fixing up the city. Now that we can get the things fixed it helps us.
  • Explain the story of how you took your picture for the SEECLICKFIX project (Describe what you took a picture of, when you took it, where you were, how, and why)?  I took a picture of a cracked up sidewalk in front of the school. I took it today during lunch from inside the school. I took it because it’s kind of dangerous to have a messed up sidewalk where kids walk past everyday.
  • What did you do in class to join SEECLICKFIX on their website?  Describe the steps you took?  I followed the instructions that Mr. Muniz gave me. Just added what I needed to add.
  • What did you do in class to report an issue to SEECLICKFIX? DON’T FORGET TO SHARE YOUR ISSUE ID NUMBER!  Describe the steps you took? I added the photo and added a description and exact location. Issue #: 4285823
  • Do you predict that the City of Oakland will fix the problem you reported?  Explain why, or why not? I feel like they will fix it because it’s kind of serious since it’s in front of a school.

Assignment #9- Oppression Essay

Oppressed people means when people are treated cruel or unfairly for a long period of time. System of oppression is an organized way to unfairly treat people for a long time. Levels of oppression are different ways to oppress people. Some ways oppressed people experience systems of oppression and levels of oppression is when Afghan men do not want women to get an educations and Emmett Till being murdered on false accusations.

First of all oppressed people experience different systems of oppression and levels of oppression because Emmett Till’s murderers got away because of the oppression of black people in that era. This document is about the murder of Emmett Till, it says that Emmett was accused of harassing a white women on the street in a place where there was Jim Crow law. He was then murdered by white men, the men accused were found not guilty, it was later found that the accusations were false. This document is an article called, “Woman Linked to 1955 Emmett Till Murder Tells Historian Her Claim Was False” written by Richard Perez-Pena on January 27, 2017. A quote from this document is, “The two white men who were accused of murdering Emmett Till in 1955… were aquitted that year by an all-white, all-male jury.” This shows that oppressed people experience systems of oppression and levels of oppression because Emmett Till was murdered because of political system of oppression, they killed him because of Jim Crow law, political system is when someone is oppressed because of law, rules, and policies. After he was killed his family went through Internalized oppression, that is when you start to believe the negative narratives about yourself, they felt because of what people thought of them there was nothing they can do.

Second of all another way oppressed people experience system of oppression and levels of oppression because in Afghanistan terrorist do not want girls to get an education. This document is about how girls in Afghanistan try to get an education risk their life to get and education, in one school terrorist threw grenades into school and killed 100 or they will throw acid in girls faces and poison their water. This document is an article called, “Acid attacks, poison: what Afghan girls risk by going to school” written by Allie Torgan on March 17, 2016. A quote from this document is, “There were at least 185 documented attacks on schools and hospitals in Afghanistan last year, according to the United Nations. The majority were attributed to armed groups opposed to girls’ education.” This implies that the men in Afghanistan do not want women to get an education because 185 attacks went undocumented, that means that there were more that were actually documented. This shows social oppression and interpersonal oppression because  social oppression is how people oppress other people based on the relationship that they have with that group of people. It’s also interpersonal because interpersonal is when oppression happens based on how people behave towards others and they treated women really bad.

Assignment #8- Marginalize and Exploit Essay

Power mean the ability to control events and behavior of other people. Marginalize means to put off to the side, or make less important. Exploit means to take unfair advantage of someone for your own benefit. When the spanish began to colonize, they had a lot of power over Native Americans. They Pot them off to the side and they made benefit off them. The Spanish men got rewarded for exploiting the Indigenous men and took the women. This is basically how the Spanish had enough power to marginalize and exploit the Indigenous.

First of all with people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because they have all that power and wealth over those people and where able invade and enslave other people. In the third document it says, “After the invasion of the Native Americans the next task was to exploit their labor.” This document is a quote from a book, Colonial America, written by Jerome R Reich in 1994. One quote is “This official was expected to Christianize and “civilize” them; they in turn were to work part time for him as well as contribute to him a share of the crops they raised themselves.” This proves that people can marginalize and exploit people with different identities because they invaded the Native Americans with all their power, then they marginalized them turning them into slaves. They also exploited them by taking the crops and making them work for them at low pay.

Second of all people with power are able to marginalize people with different identities because the FHA consider black neighborhoods ineligible for their insurance. This document is about the FHA considering black neighborhoods a “Red Zone” and where given a “D” rating being ineligible for their insurance. In the green areas or “A” rated neighborhoods that were considered “excellent prospects for insurance” did not have a single “foreigner or negro.” This is document is an article from a news website called The Atlantic, “The Case for Reparations” by Ta-Nahesi Coates written in June 2014. A quote that shows this document is, “On the maps, green areas, rated “A” indicated “in demand” neighborhoods that, as one appraiser put it, did not have “a single foreigner or negro.” This implies that people with power are able to marginalize people with different identities because the FHA considered black neighborhoods ineligible for their insurance, they made those neighborhoods less important because of the identities of the people that live there.

In conclusion people with power are able to exploit people with different identities because the Aztec people dismembered an enemy warrior for a ritual that they have. The document is about how they did this ritual where they would get an enemy warrior and turn him into a god. They will treat him like royalty for a couple of months, they then take him to a certain location and sacrifice him. This document is a recording of a seventeen year old Aztec Scribe of hif impressions of a Sacrifice Ritual, which is recorded and told to Friar de Sahagun in 1529. A quote from this document is, “ He is treated like our most royal family member during the long year leading up to his sacrifice… he is taken to chalco and dismembered in public view.” This infers that people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with other identities because the Aztecs made that enemy warrior feel like a god just to be dismembered for the Aztecs benefit.

Assignment #7- Commenting

  • Did you receive any comments to your blog?  If so, from whom?  What did they say?

I received one comment from EduBlog. It just said, “This is your first comment!” And gave me more info on the commenting stuff.

  • Which students did you write a blog comment for?                                                                                                                                                                                                              I wrote a comment for a student named Xin.
  • Copy and paste the comment you made for each student in the space below:

Assignment #6- The Columbus Narrative

  • What is something that you learned about Christopher Columbus that  you did not know before?                                                                                                                    I did not know how many people he actually killed. I didn’t know that him and his men abused little girls. I learned that he didn’t exactly landed in the US but in the caribbean islands. Also that he has so many statues and places named after him.

  • Do think Christopher Columbus deserves his own holiday?  Explain your answer.   I believe that he does not deserve a holiday. I think that all those people that he killed deserve a holiday. He was a really bad guy. He was not smart for discovering the Americas. End Christopher Columbus day.

Assignment #5- The Shadow Box Project

https://photos.app.goo.gl/YlCRfAfODhqUnaj43

Identity are the traits make people who they are. Dominate narrative is a story, most of the time negative, told about a certain race by someone with privilege and power. Counter narrative is to go against the dominant narratives. It is important because people will believe dominate narratives forever if you don’t counter it.

First of all a dominant narrative is a negative story told by people with power. It has affected me because my race is a race with a lot of dominant narratives, all negative. One picture I have is a taco with a sombrero and a big mustache. That is a lot of narratives for Mexicans. Another one I have is a sign of Oakland with a gang member drawn over it. It shows that people think that Oakland is full of gangs. Another one is a guy with an American flag shirt and a rifle with a bunch of burgers. This shows how people think of Americans.

Third of all a counter narrative is a story telling the truth countering the negative counter narratives. One picture that I chose for counter narrative is the word “career” in big words. The reason I put this is because a lot of people that a latino from Oakland could not have a good career. Another picture I chose is some NFL players kneeling down during the national anthem. Lots of people think that all Americans are racist and everyone is a Trump supporter. This proves that not all Americans are bad racist people. Some of us are against our government.

To continue identity is how someone describes who they are. They are the traits that make people who they are. One picture that I put is a Mexican flag. That is the ethnicity that I identify with. I might bring in a tiny Mexican flag instead of a picture. I’m going to put the flag on one side of the box, and on the other I am going to put an American flag because that is my Nationality.
